Storing and sharing large files - Fast and Free

With the increasing popularity of sharing home videos, mp3 audio, and other large files online, actually transferring the files to your clients, friends and family presents a problem. Most email systems limit the size of files you can send, and often completely restrict some file types, as. exe, from passing through their mail servers. Most computer geeks say, "your ftp server and I download from the Web." Unfortunately, This solution is often too much of a hassle, and actually rates impossible for people without FTP access to a website and knowledge to use it. To solve this problem, a new generation of file transfer services of website has emerged to help the process or time challenged masses share their vast online archives.

I discovered this website like most people discover new places, I saw someone wearing. A friend wanted to send me one 10MB "zip", while traveling from San Francisco to Boise. I could not wear your FTP program to upload to the Web, and AOL would not let him send a file so huge. Thus, www.yousendit.com logged in and completed a 4-step process. Entered my email address, chose the file you want to send to browse your hard drive, went into his email account in a brief message and click the send button. The service uploaded the file to the web and sent me a e-mail message with a link to download the file from its website. After downloading the file, I clicked on a link to delete the file your server. If I did not bother clicking on that link, the server automatically delete the file after 7 days.

Some things that make this unique service. First, lets you send files without forcing you to register as a user, it is completely anonymous. Secondly, that lets you send up to 100 MB file, which allows you to send virtually anything you can think to anyone with an email address and Internet access. The site seems to have its money from advertising revenue generated by popup ads and Google AdSense (where he earns a commission each time someone clicks on a link). Third, like Hotmail did the first time they start, YouSendIt.com encourages message recipients to turn around and use the service to send email to friends. This "viral marketing" effect has helped spread the word quickly without a large marketing budget.

Drop.io

www.Drop.io offers basically the same service like YouSendIt, but with two main differences: the web 2.0 look, and options for sharing and saving. Drop.io lets you create a single folder accessible only those you give the link or invite. You can also keep files stored on your server to a maximum of one year in a password-protected folder. And, unlike YouSendIt.com, Drop.io lets you add multiple files to your folder without having to upgrade to a payment account.

Overall, both services are an excellent job of solving a growing problem worldwide for a wide audience. But if push came from the truth, I'd stay with Drop.io as first choice.
